Workbook 📝
Good copywriting/messaging overview
Great copy moves you — even when it's about software.
Most copy isn't great, but the pre-launch copy for @jasonfried and co's Once is.
Every challenger brand (and marketer) can learn from this line-by-line breakdown 👇

A/B testing your subject lines is important.
For a campaign that ranked companies, I tested a generic subject line that told journalists what I was ranking.
The second subject line specifically mentioned the company that came out on top.
The second increased open rates by 30%!

Podcast pitch tip of the day…do NOT follow up less than 24 hrs later.
When I say podcast hosts have jobs & their podcast is not their main gig in most cases, it’s the truth.
Yesterday I was busy w/ work, kids, etc. A follow up less than 24 hrs later is NOT ok.

stop cold calling reporters.

One PR person on a call, fine. But in what world is three to four needed? 😩

pro tip: don't send me releases in file-sharing services. just paste the text in the email and/or link to it if it's already published online
— Kia K. (@imkialikethecar)

emailing me past like 3 pm on a Friday is a waste of your time

So many “fake exclusives” out there! There’s no such thing as a “tech exclusive” or a “business exclusive” or a regional exclusive or whatever nonsense they come up with. You’re either the only publication or you’re not.

don't put tracking links in releases or anything that you sent to reporters. just don't do it.

Recently got 76 responses to a HARO query. Guess how many met the criteria I very specifically mentioned in the request?
(The answer is six)

love it when PR people preface their email pitches with “Story idea:” like ok thank you for being my assignment editor
— Alexandra Semenova (@alexandraandnyc)

I know this probably annoys some people, but silence/no answer *is* an answer in itself

When I'm asked to send over Qs ahead of an interview, it's frustrating. But it's 10x more frustrating when a PR asks for that when THEY pitched the story!
